The marina is commonly located in a bay or other area that will protect the marina from harmful waves that form in bad weather. Marinas often serve several purposes by providing a place for boats to moor and a home for marine businesses that cater to the maritime industry. A marine boat rental company, fishing tackle marine store, even a Coast Guard marine station may be based at a marina. Some marinas also have a marine themed restaurant. Often you can fish from the marina's dock. The person in charge of the marina is often called the dock master.

Visit with a few marinas before committing to see which one can meet your needs, whether you want to rent a sailboat for a family cruise or houseboat for a large party. If you're new to boating and need to take boating lessons, flag down marina staff and ask about lessons and prices. When making reservations, find out what the availability is, marina hours, rates and rules. Check out the marina's physical location closely, making sure it is neat and well maintained.
